A massive storm barreling out of the southern Atlantic dumped more than nine inches of driving rain on Merrick and Bellmore from Saturday night to Sunday afternoon, flooding the Meadowbrook Parkway, Coleman Country Day Camp and homes throughout the community. At the storm’s height, rain fell at a rate of more than an inch an hour, on par with a hurricane, according to the National Weather Service.

Dressed in a black blouse and blue jeans, Carol Gies stood silently on Tuesday morning, her chin in her hands, her elbows resting on a crane that was lifting a twisted World Trade Center girder into the parking lot at the Merrick Fire Department’s Friendship Engine and Hose Company.
Gies, who lost her husband, Ronnie, in the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, looked forlorn.

Fire ripped through Abby’s Dry Cleaners in North Merrick just after midnight on Friday. The North Bellmore and North Merrick fire departments responded to the blaze, which engulfed the structure in flames. Police investigators said they consider the fire “suspicious.”

A multi-car accident shut down the eastbound lanes of Sunrise Highway at Dobson Avenue around 11 a.m. on Friday. Eight vehicles were involved in the accident; two were parked on the side of the road and were unoccupied.
Nassau County police were on the scene with the Merrick Fire Department. A Nassau County police helicopter was spotted landing between Dobson Avenue and Babylon Turnpike.

Members of the North Merrick Fire Department took part in the 6th Battalion Parade and Drill hosted by the Massapequa Fire Department this past weekend, and North Merrick came in fourth place overall in the drill, taking home a trophy in nearly every race category, and second place as Best Appearing unit of 15 to 30 members in the parade.
