Six Catholic schools in the Diocese of Rockville Centre are closing next year, but that doesn’t worry leaders at Holy Name of Mary School in Valley Stream. The 71-year-old school ranks 13th out of the 52 elementary schools in the diocese in terms of enrollment, putting it in the top quarter.

For the fourth consecutive year, the 16-mile stretch of Hempstead Turnpike in Nassau County was named the deadliest road for pedestrians in the tristate area by the Tri-State Transportation Campaign. The 2012 report, “Most Dangerous Roads for Walking,” was released on March 7.

The Rockville Centre St. Patrick’s Parade Committee has chosen Long Island’s leading service provider for children and adults with Down syndrome and other developmental disabilities, a Long Island provider of a “home-away-from-home” for the parents and siblings of hospitalized children and a national provider of service dogs for the severely disabled as the three charities it will financially support with the parade, scheduled for March 24.
