When Hurricane Sandy struck on Oct. 29, it severely damaged a number of Town of Hempstead facilities in the Bellmore-Merrick area. Repair work is under way, but it could be some time before they are up and running again. Particularly hard hit were the Norman J. Levy Park and Preserve, the Sanitation Department and the Merrick Senior Center.

In recent months, folks who have stopped off at Newbridge Road Park in Bellmore might have noticed the cranes and trucks behind a chain-link fence on the east side of the park. That is where the Town of Hempstead is installing a completely new bulkhead along a canal that flows south to East Bay.

I am 25 years old, and until recently, I had never dived into the water. Call me crazy, but the prospect of plunging headfirst into a deep pool of blue had always spurred a sense of anxiety in me. So I was more of a slowly-ease-yourself-into-the-water-stair-by-stair-while-wincing-and-complaining-about-how-cold-the-water-is kind of guy.

Protesters’ signs jeered at the Town of Hempstead on Sunday, calling a decision to trap and move feral cats in a colony at Newbridge Road Park in Bellmore “cruel” and “corrupt.”
The town had planed to move dozens of feral cats from their makeshift protected shelter behind the baseball field at the park. The move was set to begin on May 1, but following the weekend’s protest, the town has postponed the relocation.

A Queens man was arrested Wednesday at 11:50 p.m. and charged with stealing money from a donation box at the Jaame Mafjid Mosque on Newbridge Road in North Bellmore. Nassau County Police arrested Ahmad Saeed, 48, after the suspect was caught on the mosque’s surveillance video.

Salisbury Park Drive is a well-traveled, three-mile-long street that runs from Old Country Road to Newbridge Road. Hundreds of cars zip around the curved residential street — where the speed limit is 30 miles per hour — to avoid Hempstead Turnpike on the way home from work or on the way to the Roosevelt Field Mall.
