Betty Milano, co-director of the North Merrick Summer Recreation Program, appeared a tad nervous as the drizzle started to fall on July 23. The balloon slide was already set up. The tables full of games of chance were out. And, most important, the children were already on the back field at Old Mill Road Elementary School, prepared for a morning of fun at the program’s annual Penny Carnival.

A partnership with the Nassau County Police Department, grant proposals, and an exciting collaboration with a new local business are at the forefront of the Rockville Centre Youth Council’s agenda for this upcoming fall. After the successful open house on June 7 at the Rec Center to spotlight the mission of the council and its upcoming activities, the recognized non-profit has been making headway on many of its goals.

The lab coats are taking over.
This summer, more than a dozen students in South Side High School's science research program are interning both near and far in laboratories and universities. The high school will also be collaborating on botanical research with Hofstra University, to be completed in South Side's newly renovated greenhouse.

The East Meadow Soccer Club’s U11 Girls Travel Program (for children born between Aug. 1, 1999 and July 31, 2000) is looking to create a third team that will play in a lower division -- 5, 6 or 7 -- of the Long Island Junior Soccer League, to compliment its two upper division teams that now play in Divisions 1 and 3. The GU11 program will hold its final tryout of 2010 on Sunday, June 13, at 5:30 p.m.
