Wendy Tepfer is such an obvious choice for the Herald Life’s Person of the Year, we wondered why we had not selected her before.
Then it occurred to us: Tepfer, 63, is among the most selfless, humble people we know. But make no mistake about it: As executive director of the Bellmore-Merrick Community Parent Center, and as a PTA leader and a dedicated sports mom before that, she has been an advocate for the community for three decades.

Following a recently released National Transportation Safety Board report that calls for more comprehensive driver history checks of bus drivers, New York State Senate Transportation Committee Chairman Charles Fuschillo Jr., a Republican from Merrick, called on the state Assembly to pass legislation that would require criminal background checks for bus drivers. The legislation, sponsored by Fuschillo, was approved by the Senate in January.

The New York State Senate has passed legislation to enact felony charges for wrong-way and other reckless drivers, according to Sen. Charles Fuschillo Jr., a Republican from Merrick who sponsored the bill.
The legislation is in response to a significant number of arrests and car crashes involving individuals who drove the wrong way while under the influence of alcohol.
