This year’s election in Nassau County’s 2nd Legislative District is an extremely important one. No matter who wins, history will be made because new leadership will begin in the district. After being represented by Democrat Roger Corbin for 14 years, voters now have three community leaders vying to represent them.

While Nassau County residents are paying some of the highest taxes in the nation, Comptroller Howard Weitzman has done his part to ease the burden somewhat. During the past eight years Weitzman has shown that he is a competent financial watchdog, and has looked for savings in places no one before him ever tried.

Too often, we hear the horror stories of DWI. A drunken driver rips apart a family, maiming or killing a father, a mother, a brother or sister. Since the outbreak of World War I in 1914, more Americans have died in drunken driving crashes than in both World Wars and the Vietnam War combined — 594,161 U.S. soldiers compared with 1.6 million DWI victims and counting, according to Mothers Against Drunk Driving.

Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray has said, “Development is coming” to Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Uniondale.
The question is, will the New York Islanders be there to anchor the property when all is said and done? Or will Long Island’s only professional sports franchise move to Queens or Brooklyn, or even to Kansas City or Ontario?

Nationally, the unemployment rate remains below 10 percent — thank goodness. But among 16- to 24-year-olds, unemployment hit an astonishing 18.5 percent in July, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

With school back in session, many are concerned that another outbreak of the H1N1 virus, commonly known as swine flu, is just around the corner. An outbreak in the New York area in the spring spread fear about this new, unknown disease. Many parents kept their children home from school when cases were confirmed, leading to high absentee rates. Some schools closed entirely.

Eight years after the horror of seeing thousands of people die, towering buildings crash to the ground and a war declared on terrorism, we must not let our proclivity to move on eclipse our need to remember the victims, the heroes and the enemies of our way of life.

Millions of iPhones and BlackBerrys are being used every second, and few adults in Nassau County are without a cell phone of some kind. These devices enable more than phone calls. We can type text messages, read e-mails, connect to the Internet and type Twitter messages and Facebook updates. We can find out where the nearest pizzeria, gas station or hospital is. We can check the weather. We can get a movie review, find the closest theater where that movie is playing and when the next show starts, and then get directions to the theater. All on the phone.
