The third annual Swim Across America fundraiser was held at the Lynbrook pool last Saturday, once again coordinated by friends Julie Bergin and Kelly Stapleton. To date, they have raised over $40,000. “During this year’s kickoff event we had the privilege of meeting with the doctors who are conducting research to find a cure as a direct result of Swim Across America fundraising,” said Bergin. “This has motivated us to keep on making waves to fight cancer!” Swim Across America In. is dedicated to raising money and awareness for cancer research, prevention and treatment through swimming-related events. more

Austin Kowalsky, a senior at Mepham in North Bellmore, set out to change that this year, and handily did so with a time of 21.1 seconds, one-tenth of a second faster than the 30-year-old record. more
The Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District swim team, the Sharks, recently took part in the Long Beach Polar Bear Super Bowl Sunday Splash to raise money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Their efforts, combined with support from their families, friends and teachers, enabled them to raise more than $3,300 for the cause. more
It was a record year for the Bellmore-Merrick girls’ swim team. Finishing as runner-up in the Nassau County Championships and having sent five swimmers to the State Championship would have been enough to call it a successful season, but on top of that, the team notched yet another accolade. Coach Robert Kaefer, who has guided swimmers in and out of the pool for more than 15 years, was named the Nassau County Coach of the Year for girls’ swimming, an award voted on by his fellow coaches. more
The Calhoun High School Sports Boosters Association recently named its Athletes of the Month for October. They are Colts football quarterback Matt Brennan and swimmer Gabbie Toback. more
