The Village of Rockville Centre has fired the latest salvo in what is becoming an ongoing war of words between it and the Rockville Centre school district. In a long open letter that the village Board of Trustees sent to the Herald on Monday afternoon, the village stated that if the school district insists on linking the use of school facilities to the restoration of free garbage pickup, the village will be forced to "reassess" the access it provides the schools to village sports fields and facilities. more
Nearly five years after plans were first conceived to construct a new Peninsula Public Library (PPL) facility adjacent to Zion Park in Lawrence, an offer on the property has been made but there has not been any indication of whether the Village of Lawrence Board of Trustees would support selling the land. The PPL recently made a $700,000 offer for the 9,000 square foot parcel adjacent to the Lawrence Long Island Rail Road and Zion Park land located behind the Lawrence train station, but has not received any indication from Lawrence village officials on whether they are receptive to the offer. When asked if the village was seriously considering the PPL's offer, Lawrence mayor Simon Felder said "we're still going over issues that need to be addressed," but would not give specifics. more
Valley Stream has a full village board again after the Monday-night appointment of Vincent Grasso to its vacant seat. Grasso, a resident of the village since 1998, will serve until a special election in March, in which he intends to run. more
For the first time in more than 15 years, Ronald Goldman will not have the title of Lawrence village attorney. Goldman submitted a letter of resignation on Nov. 30 and the Lawrence village Board of Trustees voted unanimously to hire lifelong Rockville Centre resident A. Thomas Levin as the municipality's new village attorney during its Dec. 10th meeting. more
