Robert L. (Bob) Sympson is a tree hugger in every sense of the word. He is an untiring advocate of trees, planting them, studying them, educating the community about them. It’s no wonder that he has been named the recipient of the Arbor Day Foundation’s 2010 Lawrence Enersen Award for his lifelong conservation efforts.

Families welcomed the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus to its temporary home at Nassau Coliseum on Monday, March 15. Kids enjoyed circus-related activities while waiting for the elephants to parade by Long Island Children's Museum, which hosted the event along with Herald Community Newspapers.

Only 6 months old, Sophia Gaynor of Bellmore is bringing out the best in hundreds of local high school students.
Around 300 people turned out at Mepham High School's track on Oct. 22 to take a part in a walk-a-thon to benefit the charitable organization, Sophia's Cure. The organization is named for a local newborn who was diagnosed with fatal spinal muscular atrophy, a group of diseases that affect the motor neurons of the spinal cord and brain stem.

The Malverne Rotary Club's annual National Jean Company 5k Walk/Run for Education will return on Oct. 18. The race, which is held each year to raise money for the Malverne Educational and Fitness Foundation, will begin at Howard T. Herber Middle School on Ocean Avenue at 9 a.m.
