This Sunday, Sept. 26, starting at 9:30 a.m., participants from all over the country and the world will take part in the ninth annual Tunnel to Towers Walk/Run. The event retraces the path that firefighter Stephen Siller, a former Rockville Centre resident, took from the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel to the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001, when he lost his life trying to save others trapped inside the twin towers. more
On Aug. 15, the Lung Cancer Research Foundation hosted its 5th Annual Strides for Life 3-mile fun run/walk around Lake Agawam in Southampton. A record 1,100 people turned out to enjoy the gorgeous weather, bond with friends and family and raise funds for critical lung cancer research. Rockville Centre resident Joe Buckheit and fellow lung cancer survivor Joey Smith cut the ribbon to start the race with the event’s mistress of ceremonies and "Good Day NY" host Rosanna Scotto, who was busy cheering on the crowd. more

More than 60 Wilson Elementary School second graders recently completed a walking tour of the village with stops that included Sky Athletic Club, Chase Bank, ARTrageous Studio and finally, The Phillips House on Hempstead Ave. At the Phillips House — which is also known as The Museum of Rockville Centre — trustees gave the students and their teachers a guided tour of the home and explained the importance of the furnishings and artifacts in the house in regard to the early days of Rockville Centre. more

The Long Island Crisis Center in Bellmore announced this week that the Second Annual Walk for Lyla will be held June 12 at 11:45 a.m. at the Norman J. Levy Park and Preserve in Merrick. The walk is held annually in honor of Lyla Stern of Merrick, a 16-year-old Calhoun High School senior who died last year. more
