A visibly overwhelmed James Scannell, who was officially announced as the next superintendent of Baldwin schools at a Board of Education meeting on April 10, didn’t know when to stop shaking hands. A standing ovation followed board President Kim Taylor’s reading of the personnel action appointing Scannell, and the superintendent-elect rose and proceeded down a long table, beaming and accepting the congratulations of his colleagues. more

Police officials announced on Monday that they were postponing the closure, attributing the revision of their plans to the effects Hurricane Sandy had on the South Shore. more

It was standing room only at the Baldwin Public Library last Thursday as some 100 schoolchildren and their parents packed the community room to see South Baldwin resident Andre Richaud present his menagerie of “party pets.” Assisted by Desiree Prayor, Richaud, who has been handling animals for 23 years and cares for more than 200 creatures, including the famous groundhog Malverne Mel (actually a Baldwin resident), trotted out a parade of scaly and furry friends, including snakes, turtles and tortoises, chinchillas, lizards, frogs and more. more
Dominique Navarro, one of three New York City residents who, according to police, tied up an employee while robbing Baldwin’s Grand Avenue Radio Shack last May, pleaded guilty to the top charge he faced last week, first-degree robbery. He will receive an eight-year prison sentence in exchange for his plea. more

“Finding Kalman,” a short film by 1975 Baldwin Senior High School graduate Laurie Weisman and Roz Jacobs, a painter and multimedia artist, will air on public television Channel 21 on April 2 at 10:30 p.m. The documentary chronicles the ways in which Anna Jacobs, 88, a Holocaust survivor, encouraged the younger members of her family to connect with relatives they never met, and how the family copes with its history. more
