Up for re-election are Kim Taylor, current board president, and Mary Clark, the board’s second-longest-serving trustee — two distinguished, hardworking women experienced in handling the crises that seem to buffet Baldwin year after year.

Alisa Messeroff, a native of Baldwin, gave up a solid, American dream-type life to pursue an even more fabulous fantasy in Australia. This week, the 2002 Baldwin High School graduate, whose last name was Fogelberg in her BHS days, is one of 25 finalists for the dream job of outback adventurer in Tourism Australia’s Best Jobs in the World contest.

Rhoda Gilbert, a social studies teacher at Baldwin Harbor Junior High School (now Baldwin Middle School), died on January 31 at the age of 90. Gilbert’s funeral was held in San Diego, but a memorial service in Baldwin has been planned for April 29 so Gilbert’s east coast friends can celebrate her life and accomplishments. The memorial will be held at the school district office gymnasium (960 Hastings St.), at 3:30 p.m. on April 29.

A group of 16 Baldwin karate students used their legs for more than kicking last week. The energetic youngsters ran a 1-mile obstacle course that snaked through CitiField, home of the Mets, and included the playing surface and other areas normally off-limits to non-players.

Maureen Beccaris has been an officer in the Nassau County Police Department’s 1st Precinct for 26 years, but for the past six months, she said, she came to work every day not knowing where she would be the next week. She explained that her office’s supplies and papers were still in boxes, waiting to be moved to Seaford when the scheduled merger of the 1st and 7th precincts took place.

The Irish Pub celebrated its 50th year serving the Baldwin community last week and was honored by officials and residents alike. Purchased from its original owner, Dennis Daly, in April of 1978 by Jimmy Kearney and Brian Hanrahan — brothers by marriage from Queens — The Irish Pub has long been a bastion of good cheer and community spirit in Baldwin.

Baldwin Middle School students in grades 6, 7 and 8 got a pleasant surprise last Friday when rap star Busta Rhymes — the father of BMS students T’khi and Trilian Wood-Smith — and “The Voice’s” Melanie Martinez, whose brother attends the school, popped by to provide some entertainment.
