Friends, family mourn loss of local educator

Lucille (Sussman) Gruberg, 88, of Franklin Square, died on June 10, in Longmeadow, Mass. Born in Portsmouth, N.H., Gruberg graduated in 1941 from Haverhill High School in Massachusetts and was a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Queens College in New York. She taught English at Elmont Memorial High School for 22 years. more

Top Elmont graduates prepare for college

An AP Scholar and member of the National Honor Society, Julian Clemente is Elmont Memorial High School’s 2011 valedictorian. He was inducted into the Math Honor Society, the Tri-M Music Honor Society, and also participated in several clubs, including Mathletes, Class of 2011 and Students Against Destructive Decisions. more

Sewanhaka passes 2011-12 budget

The Sewanhaka Central High School budget passed this evening, with 4,628 votes in support of the budget, and 3,028 votes against it. This year's turnout — 7,656 voters — was slightly lower than last year's, when nearly 10,000 residents came to the polls to vote for the 2010-11 budget. more

Elmont natives Bill and Jim Germanakos, the fourth-season champions of NBC’s popular prime-time show “The Biggest Loser,” just keep on winning. Bill, who was declared the winner and received $250,000, and Jim — who was eliminated early in the competition but won first prize among the eliminated contestants and was awarded $100,000 — have managed to maintain both healthy lifestyles and successful careers. more

Elmont High to get sports upgrades

Elmont Memorial High School is already a great place for students to display their athletic prowess. Soon, thanks to a state grant for $90,000, students and fans will be able to take advantage of even more — with a revitalized weight room and the addition of a combination announcer’s booth and concession stand to the school’s outdoor track and baseball fields. more
