The Rockville Centre school district is hoping that residents will pass a bond issue — tentatively scheduled for a mid-December vote — so that proposed renovations to South Side High School can begin as soon as school ends in June 2010. Details of preliminary plans and a proposed project timeline were presented by Roger Smith of BBS Archictects at the Board of Education meeting Tuesday night, and Assistant Superintendent for Business Robert Bartels followed with ideas on how the district might finance the project. more

Once again, runners from Rockville Centre will participate in the Tunnel to Towers Run/Walk on Sept. 27, hosted by The Stephen Siller, FDNY ‘Let Us Do Good” Children’s Foundation. The village of Rockville Centre stands to lose the experience of as many as six seasoned police officers by year’s end, the Herald has learned, and if many of those officers do retire within weeks of each other, the village could face a substantial payout. The police department, already short staffed with two officers out on disability, an unfilled open position, and a lower-than-authorized headcount, would see the retirement of about 12 percent of its force by the end of December if all six officers leave. more
