New York state recently imposed a 2 percent tax-levy cap on school districts, forcing them to pare spending by hundreds of thousands, if not millions of dollars, unless they can win 60 percent of the vote to override the cap.

School Boards Recognition Week, sponsored by the New York State School Boards Association, was held from Oct. 31 to Nov. 4, and as is tradition in the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District, students from Grand Avenue and Merrick Avenue middle schools attended November’s Board of Education meeting to honor school trustees. The Grand Avenue chorus sang for the board, and Merrick Avenue students recited a poem that they had written, as well as offered gift baskets to each trustee.

The scenario is tragic, gruesome and perennial. A high school senior, all of 16 or 17 years old, gets a driver’s license. His or her proud parents hurry out to buy their child a new car –– perhaps a fast car. Within days or weeks, the teen is dead, killed in a fiery wreck.

Before hearing a half-hour presentation on students’ many successes on New York State and Advanced Placement exams on Wednesday night, the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District Board of Education paused at its September meeting to honor Nina Lanci, who served on the Central board for seven years before losing in her re-election bid this past spring to newcomer John Ferrara.

The Basiles of Bellmore hosted about 20 Kennedy High School couples, who gathered to chat over food with their friends and classmates as parents snapped photos. The house, located on the water, made for a beautiful evening.

Much was the same about this year’s Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District graduation ceremonies on Sunday. Seniors came attired in their caps and gowns –– blue robes for Calhoun, green for Kennedy and red for Mepham. Excited parents showered their now adult children with flowers and balloons, and snapped hundreds of photos.
