In schools throughout the Bellmore-Merrick Central District, many wooden doors are scratched up, and their handles don’t latch properly.
In most bathrooms, one or more sinks and toilets are broken and covered over. In Mepham High School’s football locker room, where the smell of sweat suffuses the air, the sink is sealed with plywood and the urinals are cemented over.

Grand Avenue Middle School eighth-graders celebrated two years of study and discussed their futures in high school at their Moving-Up Day.
Students said their final goodbyes to Grand Avenue at one of four ceremonies on June 7. Each program featured student speakers and performances by the school choir.

On April 15, 1985, 15-year-old Jason Gruen was walking into Manhasset High School, headed to class, when his heart suddenly stopped and he dropped to the ground, dead. A heart defect had gone undetected. His mother, Susan Gruen Helsinger, who now makes her home in Merrick, was devastated. She still is.
