At age 14, Mepham High School freshman and aspiring violist Joshua Corwin has already performed on a number of the New York metropolitan area’s great stages, including the Tilles Center on the C.W. Post campus of Long Island University in Brookville and Alice Tully Hall at the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in Manhattan. more

Ensuring that students make that leap in a way that respects their social and emotional needs while providing an academically rich –– and demanding –– environment is the job of the middle school principal. This coming school year, both Grand Avenue Middle School and Merrick Avenue Middle School will have new principals, each with years of experience as a classroom teacher and an administrator. more
The Baldwin Civic Association rallied the troops on a rainy May 5 for flower planting along Grand Avenue. The event was tied to a civic activism holiday called Join Hands Day and saw a contingent of kids getting their hands dirty to beautify a series of planters that BCA co-president Linda Degen said, “ran right through Baldwin.” The green-thumbed youths planted an estimated 10 flats of Marigolds in accordance with Baldwin’s designation as “Marigold City.” Some of the flowers were provided by the Town of Hempstead and others were donated by residents and local businesses. more
On Feb. 9, 115 French students and their families from Merrick Avenue and Grand Avenue middle schools, along with their teachers, Denise Schleith and Richard Zawislak, enjoyed an evening of French and hockey. more
School Boards Recognition Week, sponsored by the New York State School Boards Association, was held from Oct. 31 to Nov. 4, and as is tradition in the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District, students from Grand Avenue and Merrick Avenue middle schools attended November’s Board of Education meeting to honor school trustees. The Grand Avenue chorus sang for the board, and Merrick Avenue students recited a poem that they had written, as well as offered gift baskets to each trustee. more
Grand Avenue Middle School promotes a community of caring for all, school officials say. To further that environment, a new program, “Grand Gives Back,” was launched in September. Through the program, Grand Avenue selects different organizations each month to raise money for. Students, faculty and staff members are encouraged to donate to charities. more
Nine students have been named Citizens of the Month at Grand Avenue Middle School for October. more
At a July 13 public meeting, the Bellmore-Merrick Central Board of Education announced that it would allow only Central District teams to play on its five main football fields, thereby prohibiting youth groups from using the fields for football, soccer, lacrosse and other sports. more
Last Saturday Grand Avenue Middle School and Merrick Avenue Middle School held their fourth annual echocardiogram screenings for eighth-grade students. Some 185 Merrick-Bellmore students turned out for the event that tests for heart abnormalities. more
