In 1952, Merokean Jerome Medowar was a 22-year-old recent graduate of Long Island University, living with his parents on Hedge Lane, off Merrick Road, just west of Cammans Pond. So Medowar had a perfect vantage point to observe construction that year of Lakeside Elementary School, which became Norman J. Levy-Lakeside Elementary School after the death in 1998 of the popular state senator.

Students at Levy-Lakeside Elementary School in Merrick recently took part in a poster contest in honor of National Foreign Languages Week from March 5 to 11, sponsored by the Association of Foreign Language Teachers. The theme of this year’s contest was “You’re connected…Now communicate!” The Merrick School District offers FLES (Foreign Language in the Elementary Schools) in grades three to six. Students receive once-a-week instruction in conversational Spanish.

On Sept. 27, 2005, Jill and Craig Levine faced the unthinkable. Their 9-year-old son Robbie was rounding the bases during a Merrick Little League practice at Levy-Lakeside Elementary School in Merrick when he suddenly collapsed at home plate. He stopped breathing, and had no pulse.
Craig, an oral surgeon trained in cardiopulmonary resuscitation, gave his son CPR for five long, terrifying minutes until a paramedic arrived with a defibrillator and administered electric-shock treatment. But Robbie never woke up.
