A second public meeting was held on May 12 regarding the village’s proposal to rezone the industrial area in East Rockaway (see box for more details) — this time in a larger venue, the East Rockaway High School auditorium, to accomodate residents who wanted to voice their concerns — or their support. The first meeting, held on April 23 at Rocco’s Catering Hall, was filled to capacity and the village had to turn away residents who waited on the block-long line. The League of Women Voters hosted a Meet the Candidates Night at East Rockaway High School on May 10. Three candidates, Patti Nicoletti, Kristin Ochtera and Sam Schwarzman are running for three available seats on the school board. Pat Sympson was the moderator. Thirteen questions were provided by members of the audience and answered by the three candidates. They had time for a three-minute summation at the end of the forum. more
The Coalition for Youth in East Rockaway became an official organization within the village of East Rockaway on April 29, forming an unprecedented alliance between the village and the school district. With Deputy Mayor Richard Meagher at the helm, the meeting was attended by dozens of interested parents, school, PTA and village officials, and concerned residents. more
The National Civic League announced that the Village of Lynbrook has been named one of its finalists for the 2010 All-America City awards, the nation’s oldest and most prestigious civic recognition award. Lynbrook was the only village that was chosen in the state of New York. more
Robert L. (Bob) Sympson is a tree hugger in every sense of the word. He is an untiring advocate of trees, planting them, studying them, educating the community about them. East Rockaway and Lynbrook thespians took part in a recent production of "On Broadway -- A Musical Revue" in Island Park recently. The cast of 70 plus included many local actors, including community theater veterans as well as first-timers. Tickets sales broke records for ITPG, according to Director Renee Socci. more
