New Visions School of Exploration and Discovery, part of the Freeport School District, hosted its annual DeSTEMber Day on Wednesday, Dec. 17, giving students in grades K–4 a hands-on celebration of science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics.
The winter-themed event transformed classrooms and common areas into interactive learning spaces where students explored, created and innovated through a series of collaborative challenges. Designed to foster critical thinking and creativity, DeSTEMber Day encouraged students to apply classroom concepts in engaging, seasonal ways.
Throughout the day, students took part in a variety of hands-on activities, including engineering freestanding pipe-cleaner trees, designing popsicle-stick catapults to launch snowballs, and creating protective systems to deliver candy canes safely. Other challenges included winter-themed coding exercises, a reindeer relay, and a special delivery activity in which students built parachutes and baskets to transport a toy to a designated target.
“DeSTEMber Day brings learning to life for our students,” said Principal Jessica Romero. “These experiences inspire curiosity, creativity, and confidence while helping students develop problem-solving skills that extend beyond the classroom.”
The event highlighted the school’s commitment to innovative, experiential instruction, showcasing young learners actively engaged in exploration and discovery through student-centered learning experiences.
