Edward Richard Manck, who was born in Baldwin in 1921, died in late November at the age of 91. Before he died, Manck — an underwriter for MetLife who served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II — set down some thoughts about the Baldwin of his youth. In late Oct. of last year the Herald ran a story tracking the weight loss program of a group of Baldwin Firemen. (“Pulling their fat out of the fire,” Oct. 25 to Nov. 2.) The boys signed on with Kristie Lengel, owner of Baldwin’s L.E.A.R.N. Fitness, to lift heavy things, run great distances, and figure out what kinds of changes they could make in their eating and drinking habits. The program has been a success. “The boys lost a total of 109.4 pounds and 45.5 inches,” Lengel said. “They all have continued their memberships at L.E.A.R.N. and continue to lose weight and improve their health.” more

Army Sgt. 1st Class Kevin Lipari, 39, of Baldwin, died on Dec. 14 while serving in the Logar province of Afghanistan, the Department of Defense said last week. Lipari was assigned to the HHC 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team, a part of Operation Enduring Freedom. more
