Students across Baldwin Union Free School District’s elementary schools created more than 1,400 handmade Valentine’s Day cards for veterans in hospitals and nursing homes nationwide through this year’s Valentines for Vets initiative.
Students from Brookside, Lenox, Meadow, Plaza and Steele elementary schools participated in programs organized by the offices of Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman, Assemblywoman Judy Griffin and Councilwoman Laura Ryder, crafting messages of appreciation and gratitude for men and women who served in the armed forces.
The cards are being distributed throughout February to veterans across the country in recognition of Valentine’s Day. District officials said Baldwin schools have participated in the program annually, contributing more than 10,000 valentines over the past several years to honor veterans’ service.
