Building evacuated, testing underway

The Baldwin Public Library closed early today due to concerns regarding air purity.

“When a couple staff members felt ill, the Fire Department was called in to test the air quality,” said Catherine Overton, Assistant Director of the BPL. “No contaminants including carbon monoxide were found.”

The library was evacuated and shut for the day until the heating system could be checked. First Deputy Chief of the Fire Department, Kevin Smith said, “The county hazardous materials team is currently testing the air in the building. We should have conclusions later in the week.”

Overton told the Herald that seven members of library staff had been taken to a local hospital for monitoring.
