Despite the cancellation of Baldwin's annual Memorial Day parade because of inclement weather, residents, veterans and local officials gathered at Baldwin High School on May 26 for a Memorial Day Commemoration Ceremony hosted by American Legion Baldwin Post No. 246.
The post invited Legion family members, veterans and community residents — including those who would have participated in the parade — to attend the ceremony, emphasizing that the community would "not miss the opportunity to Honor and Remember."
The ceremony honored the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving in the U.S. military. Veterans, first responders, elected officials and residents filled the auditorium to reflect on the meaning of Memorial Day and pay tribute to the nation's fallen heroes.
Assemblywoman Judy Griffin joined American Legion Post No. 246 Commander Hare, Nassau County Legislator Debra Mulé and members of the Baldwin community for the event.
"Although the Baldwin Memorial Day Parade was unfortunately canceled due to the weather, it was inspiring to see the community still come together in the high school auditorium to recognize the true meaning of Memorial Day and pay tribute to our fallen heroes," Griffin wrote on social media. "The ceremony provided an important opportunity to reflect on their courage, sacrifice, and the responsibility we all share to preserve their legacy for future generations."
The ceremony also recognized this year's parade grand marshal, Erik Mahler, who received a New York State Assembly citation. Griffin congratulated Mahler and thanked American Legion Baldwin Post No. 246, the Baldwin School District and the event organizers for continuing the annual tradition despite the weather.
Members of the Baldwin Fire Department participated in a wreath-laying ceremony, standing beside a red, white and blue memorial wreath beneath a large American flag displayed inside the school.
