Baldwin Public Library is filling its May calendar with programs designed to draw in every age group, from film lovers and bookworms to families looking for a creative afternoon outdoors. This month’s lineup mixes suspense on the screen, thoughtful literary discussion and hands-on artistic fun — giving residents several reasons to stop by beyond simply borrowing books. Here are three activities to keep on your radar.
Moviegoers can settle in for an afternoon showing of “The Housemaid” on May 8 from 1 to 4 p.m. in the library’s second-floor Community Room. The 2025 psychological thriller, based on the book with the same name by Frieda McFadden, follows Millie, a woman who takes a housekeeping job with a wealthy couple only to discover their hidden secrets may be more dangerous than her own. Starring Sydney Sweeney, Amanda Seyfried and Brandon Sklenar, the R-rated film runs 131 minutes and offers patrons a chance to enjoy a recent theatrical release in a relaxed community setting.
Book lovers will have the opportunity to meet author Katie Yee during the Afternoon Book Discussion Author Event on May 13 from 2 to 3 p.m. in the Makerspace. Yee will discuss her debut novel, “Maggie; Or, a Man and a Woman Walk Into a Bar,” a darkly humorous and emotionally layered story about betrayal, illness and identity. The novel follows an unnamed Chinese-American narrator coping simultaneously with her husband’s affair and a breast cancer diagnosis — both represented by “Maggie.” Adult Programming Librarian Elly Muller will lead the discussion.
For those looking for a lighter and more colorful outing, the library will host an all-ages Sidewalk Chalk program on May 23 from noon to 1 p.m. on the outdoor patio. Community members are invited to stop by and transform the pavement into a shared canvas using chalk provided by the library. No registration is required, making it an easy drop-in activity for parents, children, teens and adults hoping to enjoy some spring weather while creating temporary works of art together.
