Three recurring October programs at the Baldwin Public Library

Posted

The Baldwin Public Library will offer several community programs throughout October, including a Halloween costume giveaway, a pet food drive and a film challenge for teens and adults. The programs give Baldwin residents opportunities to pick up free children’s costumes, donate pet food and participate in a film challenge in connection with Banned Books Week.

  1. Banned Books Weeks fall film challenge

The Baldwin Public Library will host a fall film challenge for teens and adults in connection with Banned Books Week, which runs Oct. 4 through Oct. 10. To participate, patrons must watch five feature films adapted from frequently challenged or banned books between Sept. 1 and Oct. 31. Suggested titles include “The Hate U Give,” “The Shining,” “The Kite Runner,” and “Ordinary People.” Entry forms are available at the Adult Information Desk and Teen Servies Desk. Participants must list their five film choices and contact information, then submit the form by Oct. 31 to be entered into a rattle. Separate prizes will be awarded for each age group.

  1. The Great Give Back: Baxter’s Pet Pantry Pet Food Drive

The Baldwin Public Library will collect pet food throughout October as part of “The Great Give Back,” a statewide public library community service initiative created by the Suffolk County Public Library Directors Association and the Suffolk Cooperative Library System, in conjunction with the Nassau Library System. From Oct. 1 through Oct. 31, the library will serve as a drop-off site for Long Island Cares’ Baxter’s Pet Pantry, collecting unopened, unexpired nonperishable food for household pets, including dogs, cats, hamsters, birds and reptiles. The drive aims to assist families facing food insecurity by providing food for their pets.

  1. Halloween costume giveaway

The Baldwin Public Library will host a Halloween costume giveaway in the Children’s Room from Oct. 5 through Oct. 31. The giveaway aims to give gently worn costumes a second use while providing local families with a free option for Halloween festivities. Parents can visit during regular operating hours to select a pre-owned Halloween costume for their child while supplies last.  The donated costumes are geared primarily toward elementary school-age students.  No registration or library card is required.
