Cars, home catch fire

Baldwin firefighters received word of a car fire shortly before midnight on May 21, but by the time crews arrived on the scene, the fire had spread to the home where the car was parked, on the corner of Eastern Parkway and Hayes Place.

It took firefighters about a half-hour to control the blaze, Chief Craig Yanantuono said, and the rear of the home, including its second floor and attic, suffered extensive smoke and water damage. There were two cars and a personal watercraft in the driveway, all of which caught fire.

Yanantuono said the fire appeared to have started in one of the cars. The cause was still under investigation as the Herald went to press, but he added that it did not appear suspicious.

Neighboring units from Oceanside, Freeport, Merrick and Hempstead also responded.

This was Baldwin’s first structural fire since Oct. 28, Yanantuono said, which is an unusually long stretch of time for a community of Baldwin’s size.
