Nassau County Legislature Alternate Deputy Minority Leader Debra Mulé joined members of the Nassau County Amateur Radio Club at Baldwin Park on Saturday, June 28, in celebration of National Amateur Radio Field Day.

Since 1933, amateur radio operators—commonly known as “ham” radio operators—have marked the annual event by setting up temporary radio stations in public places to demonstrate the science, skill, and public service value of amateur radio. The day also serves as a way for clubs across North America to practice emergency communications in the event of natural disasters or widespread outages.

“This longstanding tradition offers a glimpse into the science and skill behind ham radio and gives clubs across North America a platform to showcase the important public service that can be provided through ham radio when disasters disrupt cell phone and internet service,” Mulé wrote in a news release. “I was thrilled to spend some time with Nassau Amateur Radio Club and hear more about their deep passion for this important form of communication.”

Members of the club, which includes licensed radio operators from across the county, spoke with Mulé about how amateur radio provides a reliable backup communication system when modern infrastructure fails. The club demonstrated some of its portable equipment and communication techniques used during emergencies.

Field Day is coordinated annually by the American Radio Relay League, the national association for amateur radio, and is one of the most popular on-the-air events in the United States, with thousands of participants nationwide.
