NYAW to replace water main along Sunrise in Baldwin

New York American Water announced on Nov. 9 that 3,000 feet of water mains dating back to 1911 will be replaced in Baldwin. The $4 million project was expected to begin on Nov. 14, after the Herald went to press.

“Replacing aging water infrastructure is an essential part of ensuring the health and safety of our water systems now and into the future,” Rich Kern, vice president of operations for NYAW, said in a statement. “This water main replacement project presents some unique challenges given its location and the scope of work.”

Kern said the work will cause some minor inconveniences for residents, but was confident those would be kept to a minimum. Workers will replace 3,000 feet of four-, six- and eight-inch water mains with a 20-inch main to improve water quality and pressure to Baldwin and Oceanside customers.

Two fire hydrant and 25 utility-owned service lines will also be replaced as part of the project. Drilling will have to take place at Sunrise Highway and Grand Avenue to make way for the water main. Work is expected to run through May 2019, according to NYAW. Most of the work will take place from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., but drilling will take place between 8 p.m. and 4 a.m. in an effort to minimize traffic disruptions.

The planned construction will take place at Grand Avenue from the south side of Sunrise to Brooklyn Avenue; Brooklyn Avenue from Grand to Grove streets; and Grove Street from Brooklyn to Harvard avenues.

There may be disruptions to parking in the Baldwin Long Island Rail Road station on Brooklyn Avenue, according to NYAW. Any resident with a concern or question about the planned work is encouraged to call New York American Water customer service center at (877) 426-6999.
