Congregants, young and old, of Central Synagogue – Beth Emeth celebrated Simchat Torah on Oct. 11 with a pizza party and service, which included unraveling the entire Torah scroll.
Simchat Torah, meaning Rejoicing with the Torah in Hebrew, is a Jewish holiday that began this year on Oct. 12 and ended on Oct. 13. It immediately follows Sukkot, and marks the end of the annual cycle of public Torah readings, and the beginning of a new cycle.
After students in the congregation’s religious school enjoyed pizza in the hut, or sukkah, a temporary structure used during the weeklong festival of Sukkot, children and adults got a close-up look at the Torah scroll as it was unrolled around the sanctuary.
