The men (and women) in white coats

BHS medical academy students presented with lab jackets

A group of 58 students in Baldwin Senior High School’s Medical Academy program were presented with white lab coats last week — a special occasion similar to ceremonies held in medical schools. The coats, donated by North Shore LIJ and the Baldwin School-to-Career program, will be used by the upper grades in their classes and on field trips to medical facilities, school district spokeswoman Cristina Schmohl said.

BHS currently has three academy programs: medical, law and global business and STEM/engineering. The medical program encompasses not only medicine, but science, nursing, technology and a variety of other disciplines.

The ceremony was held before school began on Sept. 27, when Science Chair Barbara Reiss presented a symbolic lab coat to student Tyler Warner. Teachers presented the coats to other students, who were congratulated by school board Vice President Mary Jo O’Hagan; James Scannell, assistant superintendent for instruction; and Joseph Cabral, senior vice president and chief human resources officer of North Shore LIJ.

There are currently 100 student enrolled in the Medical Academy program. This year’s class is the first that will have attended the academy in all four years of high school.
