Three September programs to enjoy at Baldwin Public Library

Posted

As summer gives way to fall, the Baldwin Public Library is offering a full slate of programs designed to entertain, engage and bring the community together. Throughout September, residents can enjoy Friday afternoon movie screenings, take part in book discussions and get moving with line dancing classes. Whether you’re looking to discover a new read, spend an afternoon at the movies or learn some new steps, the library has something for a variety of interests. Here are three programs to add to your calendar.

1. Catch a Friday afternoon movie

Movie lovers can spend their Friday afternoons at the Baldwin Public Library with three films scheduled in September. The series begins Sept. 4 at 1 p.m. with “Michael,” a 2026 biopic about Michael Jackson, known as the King of Pop. On Sept. 18, the library will screen Steven Spielberg’s 2021 adaptation of “West Side Story,” which follows the forbidden romance at the center of a rivalry between two New York City street gangs. The month concludes Sept. 25 with the 2004 comedy-drama “Spanglish,” starring Adam Sandler and Téa Leoni. All three films are rated PG-13 and will be shown in the second-floor Community Room. Registration is not required.

2. Turn the page with fellow readers

Readers can share their thoughts on two novels during the library’s hybrid book discussions. The Afternoon Book Discussion will explore Xochitl Gonzalez’s “Last Night in Brooklyn” on Sept. 9 from 2 to 3 p.m. Led by Marialisa Arnold, head of materials management, the discussion will examine a young woman whose life becomes intertwined with her glamorous neighbor’s secret past. On Sept. 14 from 7 to 8 p.m., Adult Programming Librarian Elly Muller will lead a Mystery Book Discussion of Silvia Moreno-Garcia’s “Velvet Was the Night,” a historical noir set amid political unrest in 1970s Mexico City. Both programs will be held in the second-floor Makerspace with a hybrid participation option. Registration is required.

3. Step into September with line dancing

Baldwin residents can get moving and learn some new steps during line dancing classes at the library this September. Sessions are scheduled for Sept. 10 and 17 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the second-floor Community Room. Line dancing offers participants a chance to enjoy an active evening while learning choreographed dances performed in rows or lines, making it an activity that does not require a dance partner. The two Thursday evening sessions are part of the Baldwin Public Library’s adult programming lineup for the month. Those interested in attending should check with the library for registration information and availability.
