Basement fire on Matheron Avenue injures two Baldwin firefighters

Posted

Two Baldwin firefighters were injured Monday night while battling a house fire on Matheron Avenue that began in the basement and spread to the first floor, according to the Baldwin Fire Department.

Fire officials said crews were dispatched to the two-story home at about 8:30 p.m. on April 20. First-arriving firefighters encountered smoke showing and discovered fire in the basement, prompting the transmission of a working fire and a request for mutual aid.

At least two hand lines were put into operation as firefighters worked to contain the blaze, which extended to the first floor of the private dwelling. The fire was brought under control within about 35 minutes.

Two firefighters suffered burns and smoke inhalation and were transported to a hospital for treatment, officials said.

All occupants of the home self-evacuated safely and were not injured.

The Baldwin Fire Department was assisted by mutual aid departments, with approximately 75 firefighters responding to the scene. The American Red Cross also responded to assist displaced residents.

Baldwin Chief of Department Mike Parise had command of operations.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Nassau County Fire Marshal and the Nassau County Police Department’s Arson & Bomb Squad.
