Water main bursts on Seaman Avenue

Water gushed onto a Baldwin road Thursday morning after a water main broke, causing the water supply to be shut off to about 25 homes for much of the day, according to Brian Bruce, president of New York American Water.

Around 8:20 a.m., Bruce said, NYAW employees observed a pressure drop in their system. After a truck was sent to the scene on Seaman Avenue just west of Herbert Street, it was determined that a 16-inch water main had broke, Bruce said.

Crews worked to stop the burst Thursday morning and repaired and replaced the section of pipe into the afternoon and evening, Bruce said. In order to complete the repairs, he added, the water supply needed to be shut of to about 25 homes, but residences in the surrounding area experienced low water pressure for about an hour until they were back at full strength.

Bruce said the water main break did not cause any flooding in nearby homes and the cause is still under investigation.
