Winter cooking decorating at the Baldwin Public Library

The Baldwin Public Library invited local tweens to decorate winter-themed sugar cookies during a hands-on program on Jan. 24. The event was led by Melinda Space of Thems the Breaks and offered students a creative, seasonal activity ahead of a weekend snowstorm on Long Island.

Students in grades four through seven participated in the workshop, where pre-baked sugar cookies shaped like hats, mittens and snowflakes were ready for decorating. Space demonstrated various techniques and assisted attendees as they designed their cookies.

“We love that the library offers fun, creative opportunities like cookie decorating, especially during the winter, so students can explore culinary arts in a hands-on way,” said Sophea Sainsurin, who attended the program with her daughter, Sothanee.

In addition to decorating, the program included an educational component. Students learned about cocoa beans and the origins of chocolate, as well as how cocoa is transformed into chocolate and career paths such as baking and pastry arts.

Sainsurin and her daughter said they enjoyed the experience at the library.

“I love learning new things, and decorating cookies was fun and tasty too, because I got to eat the cookies I decorated,” Sothanee said.
