Long Beach pride is shining as bright as gold thanks to hometown hero Charlie McAvoy and Team USA. The national men’s hockey team captured the gold medal at the 2026 Winter Olympics with a nail-biting overtime win to beat Team Canada 2 to 1. The medal is the first US gold in men’s hockey since the “Miracle on Ice,” when Team USA earned a hard-fought win over the Soviet Union on Feb 22, 1980.

The students at Barnum Woods Elementary School prepared an enormous donation of 1,019 boxes of cereal for the people of East Meadow and beyond. To celebrate the achievement, students set up a proper Barnum Woods send-off: setting up all of the boxes into an enormous domino display that, when toppled, sent ripples throughout the school’s longest hallways.
