The students in our classrooms today are preparing to enter a world that will look very different from the one in which many of us grew up. As educators, we have a responsibility to stay informed and prepare our students to navigate this rapidly changing world with confidence, curiosity and good judgment. At the same time, we must thoughtfully introduce new ideas, approaches and technologies to the learning experience.

The more you witness the history of our multiple governments, the more you realize how our current government is no longer capable of serving the people who desperately need it. I have no issue with the people from both parties who provide us with services in our counties, towns and villages. But I am saddened by our federal system, which serves only itself.

Whether it’s the war in Iran, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, China’s expansionism or the continuing threat of Islamist terrorism, the United States and the world are faced with crises from multiple directions. This should be a time when nations with common values and interests forge a united front, no matter our policy differences or personality clashes.

Teaching sports management, I find a lot of motivation in working with students who are going to be the future leaders in this growing industry. But have I felt joy? Not really. To see your favorite teams lose year after year — and my teams seemed to lose a lot of painful games — sapped the joy out of being a fan. I’ve always felt like an outsider in the world of fandom, jealous of others around the country whose teams achieved their ultimate goal. We’re New York fans, for God’s sake. We deserved better!
