“We have the highest taxes here, and Nassau can’t even pay their bills,” said Carol Ann Sustad-Renz, a Lynbrook native, reacting to county voters’ rejection on Aug. 1 of a proposal to borrow $400 million to build a new arena and minor league baseball stadium at the site of the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Uniondale. “… [T]he county is broke, but yet they would have found the money somewhere or somehow — yes, on the backs of us taxpayers.”

It’s hard to argue with a track record like that of Nassau County Executive Thomas Suozzi, a Democrat from Glen Cove. Over the past eight years, he took a fiscally mismanaged, virtually insolvent county and turned it around, consistently balancing a budget that seemingly could not be balanced.
Suozzi saved money by cutting the county work force by 1,000 employees and instituting tried-and-true management practices that were previously nonexistent. At the same time, he has put in place a host of programs to improve residents’ quality of life, from smoking-cessation regimens to energy-efficiency incentives.

We’d love to live in the future Nassau County envisioned by Tom Suozzi, full of cool downtowns, a redeveloped Hub (the area surrounding the Nassau Coliseum) and lots of affordable housing for young singles as well as for our seniors.

Islanders fans from across Long Island made the pilgrimage on Saturday to the team’s new home at UBS Arena in Elmont. Despite a disappointing game result — the Islanders lost to the Calgary Flames 5-2 — fans were elated to finally have a home for their favorite hockey team after years of uncertainty, recreating the exuberant cheering that so defined games at Nassau Coliseum, known affectionately as “The Barn.”
