Judges are struggling to identify qualified guardians for people who lack financial resources or family members able to serve. Hospital administrators and discharge planners tell me about patients who are medically ready to leave but remain stuck in beds because no one is legally authorized to arrange home care, apply for benefits or consent to placement. Families and service providers are left trying to navigate an already complex system without the authority they need to help.

I sit down to write about the epidemic of obsessive overthinking that grips many of us as we try to get through the day, decision by decision. Should I set the alarm for 7:15 a.m. and have time for coffee, or 7:25 and sleep 10 more minutes? Should I wear the boots to work? And how long should I think about this? You take my point.

Ruettiger was none of these. He played for a total of less than 40 seconds, and made one tackle in Notre Dame’s final home game of the 1975 season, his senior year, against Georgia Tech. Because the Irish were leading 24-3 when Coach Dan Devine put Ruettiger in the game, that tackle had zero impact on the game or the season.

The world around us is moving at such a rapid pace that it’s impossible to keep up with the blizzard of news that we endure each day. As we prepare to celebrate the 250th anniversary of our wonderful country, I often think about the Founding Fathers and the challenges they faced to tell the nation about their vision of what they wanted America to become, and about our responsibilities as its citizens.
