An eventful ‘pawpooloza’ at East Meadow's Parkway Elementary School

A fourth grader’s inspiration turned into a weeklong, schoolwide effort to support animals in need, as students participated in “Pawpooloza: A Week of Paws and Purpose” last week at Parkway Elementary School in East Meadow.

After reading “Chi Chi’s Story,” the student was moved by the idea that animals can be mistreated and wanted to take action. “Chi Chi’s Story” is about a dog who was abused and physically thrown out. The goal of the week was to make “tails wag” — the student who spearheaded the weeklong even realized how hard and expensive it is to take care of just one animal. And so, what began as a personal response quickly grew into a larger initiative, as she developed a detailed plan and enlisted the help of her classmates to bring the event to life.

The result was Pawpooloza — a week centered on helping animals, building teamwork and celebrating kindness. The student-led effort included a kickoff assembly, themed activities, a schoolwide parade and a donation drive benefiting the Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter.

As part of the initiative, the student also created a mission statement to guide the effort: “The mission is to help animals get what they need to feel comfortable in their temporary home. We are going to try to donate as much as we can to the Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter. We are also going to have a fun week learning about and supporting animals.”

The week began with a student-organized assembly, where participants introduced the initiative and shared its purpose. Representatives from the Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter also spoke with students about pet safety and responsibility, and therapy dogs were on hand to engage with the audience.

Throughout the week, students took part in a variety of themed activities. They dressed as their favorite animals, created posters to raise awareness about animal care and adoption, and learned chants to build excitement for the culminating event.

The week concluded with an indoor parade, where students wore team colors, carried their handmade posters and chanted as they made their way through the school. Along the parade route, they dropped off donations they had collected throughout the week. The items were later displayed together, showcasing the collective impact of the school community.

Beyond the activities, Pawpooloza highlighted the power of student leadership and the importance of giving young people a voice. What started as one student’s idea became a shared effort, bringing the school community together in support of a meaningful cause.
