Battle of the Classes — more than a competition

Students honor late social studies teacher

East Meadow High School’s Battle of the Classes, on Feb. 27, is a well-known event that has taken place at the school for many years. This year’s Battle was like no other, especially for the seniors of East Meadow High.

For many of us who have participated in the past, we know that the seniors have had the reputation of being the first place winners. This year, for the first time ever, the seniors tied the juniors. Although this was incredibly shocking, it definitely did not take away from the fun in preparing and competing.

The friendly competition, with teams representing all the high school’s grades, included an obstacle course, a tug of war, a basketball shoot-off, and the famous pie eating contest. The hype built up during these events, by both the students and the audience, is indescribable.

One of the most important parts of this year’s Battle was honoring the memory of Eric Helming, a social studies teacher who recently died. Students all wore a heart on their shirts with the initials “E.H.” Although Mr. Helming was not physically there, he was definitely in all of our hearts that night.

Even though this event is a competition, it is also known to bring students, teachers, and even family together. The preparation and hard work this past month shows how much we truly care about the unity East Meadow has.
