The Theodore Roosevelt Council, Boy Scouts of America, gathered all units at Eisenhower Park to celebrate scouting’s 100th year.

The centennial celebration attracted thousands of people to the park last weekend, including about the scouts who camped there overnight on Oct. 29-30.

Cub Scout packs, Boy Scout troops, Venture crews, Explorer posts and Sea Scout Ships participated in demonstrations, exhibitions and competitions of scouting skills and sportsmanship.

A Scout Show culminated the event, featuring Theodore Roosevelt, impersonated by Jim Foote, and the band Simple Generosity, winner of both WBAB and WRCN 2010 Long Island’s Best Band competitions. The show was at the Harry Chapin Lakeside Theater.

Some of the demonstrations and challenges included: confidence courses (log and rope bridges, spider web, cargo net); orienteering (GPS, maps, distance and bearings), pioneering (monkey bridge, tower, catapult); knots and lashings (log haul, knot relay, rope toss); knife, saw and axe (Safe handling, 2 man log saw, match split); hawk and knife throwing and branding (safe use, throwing skills, bucking barrel); archery, volleyball, ultimate frisbee, relay races, Pinewood Derby, smoke house, first aid, drag races, finger printing, crime prevention and bicycle safety.

Several of East Meadow’s scouts were on hand. Troop No. 362 of East Meadow hosted its own demonstration on how to properly fold and present the American flag.
