This summer, a dozen W.T. Clarke Middle and High School students represented East Meadow on a statewide stage. Selected through a competitive process, they joined peers from across New York in the American Choral Directors Association Summer Honor Choir at Siena College in Albany. The event highlighted not only their musical talent but also the strength of the district’s choral program.
1. A prestigious program for young singers
The New York ACDA Summer Honor Choir is a selective program that attracts students from across the state who show advanced skill and dedication to music. Held annually at Siena College, the program immerses participants in two days of intensive rehearsals under the direction of distinguished conductors. Students explore complex choral pieces and sharpen their technical ability while learning to perform collaboratively at a high level. The experience culminates in a final concert, where singers demonstrate the results of their preparation. For many, it is an introduction to the type of musical rigor they may encounter in college-level ensembles and professional choirs.
2. Recognition for Clarke’s choral program
The selection of 12 W.T. Clarke students reflects the depth of talent within East Meadow’s music program. Under the leadership of teacher Kaitlin Melker, Clarke choirs have built a reputation for excellence, often performing at district and community events. Participation in statewide ensembles like the ACDA Honor Choir not only gives individual students a chance to shine but also reinforces the school’s commitment to music education. Being chosen for such a program highlights the hours of practice and dedication required from both students and staff, while showing how extracurricular arts opportunities help young people grow as performers and leaders.
3. Celebrating student achievement
The honor choir featured students Ally Angell, William Benowitz, Nova Capace, Olivia Carmody, Brianna Cosme, Cooper Dasilva, Riley Greff, Catalina Hopkins, Arielle Marte, Bayli Pham, Sanya Taluja, and Ramari West. Each demonstrated exceptional musicianship during the audition process, which required not just vocal ability but also an understanding of music theory and a commitment to intensive rehearsals. Their success adds to the tradition of strong musical achievement in East Meadow schools. Opportunities like this help young artists build confidence, expand their musical horizons, and create lasting connections with peers who share their passion for singing. The district commended all participants for representing their community with distinction.
