With summer activities in full swing, the Board of Fire Commissioners of the East Meadow Fire District is reminding residents to take precautions to prevent fires and stay safe around water, on bicycles and skateboards, and while enjoying outdoor recreation.
Fire officials said warmer weather typically brings an increase in fire-related and other emergencies. To help residents stay safe throughout the season, the district encourages residents to use propane and charcoal grills outdoors only, as using them indoors can cause deadly carbon monoxide poisoning or start a fire. Before using a propane grill, residents should make sure the tank is in good condition, all connections are secure and there are no leaks. If a propane leak is suspected, the East Meadow Fire Department should be contacted at (516) 542-0576. Grills should be kept at least 6 feet away from homes, garages, sheds and other structures, and should never be used under eaves, awnings, overhanging tree branches, on porches or on balconies. Chimineas, outdoor fireplaces and fire pits should also be used only outdoors and at least 10 feet away from homes or anything that can catch fire.
The district also urges residents to leave fireworks to the professionals, noting that fireworks are dangerous and sparklers can reach temperatures of up to 1,200 degrees, causing severe burns. Around pools, floats, balls and other toys should be removed from the water and pool deck after swimming, and adults should closely supervise children around water. Officials also recommend swimming with a buddy whenever possible. Boaters should always wear a U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket.
For bicyclists and skateboarders, the district recommends wearing a helmet and bright clothing so motorists can see them, as well as adding reflectors to bicycles for increased visibility. Riders should keep both hands on the handlebars, travel single file with traffic and obey all stop signs and traffic signals.
In the event of a fire or medical emergency, residents should call the East Meadow Fire Department at (516) 542-0576. Additional safety information is available at eastmeadowfd.com.
