EMFD remembers Ex Captain Michael Smith

Posted

The Board of Fire Commissioners, together with the Chief’s Office, and officers and members of the East Meadow Fire Department sadly announce the passing of Ex Captain Michael Smith.

On Aug. 24, 2001, Michael Smith joined the ranks of Engine Company #2. A seasoned volunteer firefighter already having spent several years of volunteer service as a member of the New Hyde Park Fire Department, Smith would bring his years of experience to the truck room of Station 2 whether it was to train with his new family, or jump on Engine 612, ready to help a neighbor on their worse day.

A man who exemplified the true dedication, and commitment, of this outstanding company, Smith would always be there.

As the years passed, Smith would continue to demonstrate the best of leadership skills necessary to lead an entire company.

In 2016, his aspirations led him to be elected to the position of 2nd Lieutenant. His rise in command would promote him to 1st Lieutenant in 2017, and on to Company Captain in 2018.

After his term of office, Smith continued to be an integral part of Engine Company #2, and our community.

A loving family man, and a strong man of fine character, Smith would do anything for his extended family at the EMFD.

But, in recent months our organization received word that Smith had become ill. His illness quickly progressed to stage 4 lung cancer.

As word spread across the EMFD, members of Engine 2 worked to support the family, and establish a fundraiser to assist with medical bills.

Then on the morning of Dec. 28, members of the EMFD were broken hearted to learn that Smith had succumbed to his illness. He was 55.

With great sadness, on Jan. 4, Ex Captain Michael Smith was laid to rest by his EMFD family in a uniformed tribute fitting of the outstanding service Smith gave our community.

He is survived by his loving wife Victoria and his two loving daughters. We ask our community to please keep the Smith family in your thoughts and prayers in this difficult time.

Prior to his passing, a fundraiser was arranged for Feb. 8, from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the EMFD Headquarters. As a sign of love and support our event will be held as scheduled. All proceeds will go the assist the Smith family with medical expenses. There will be a cash bar, food, music, raffles, 50/50 and a Chinese auction for purchase during the event. Tickets are $10.00 per person.

All residents wishing to show their gratitude, and friends of Mike Smith are welcome to attend.

Those wishing to send a donation may do so by sending to Engine Company #2 (Mike Smith Fund Raiser) at 197 East Meadow Avenue East Meadow NY 11554, or you can Venmo your donation to SmithFundRaiser2020@gmail.com.   We thank all those in advance for support of this very dedicated volunteer.

Rest peacefully our friend. We’ll take it from here.
