Firefighters halt vacant building fire

East Meadow firefighters quickly extinguished a basement fire on Sunday at a vacant building on the corner of Second Street and Hempstead Turnpike.

The East Meadow Fire Department responded to a call for a fire at a vacant building on the corner of Second Street and Hempstead Turnpike, across from the Nassau University Medical Center on Sunday night, just before midnight. A small fire started in the basement and firefighters in the first hose team were able to extinguish it before a spread. The ladder company ventilated the building, and searched for people. According to fire officials, someone was illegally in the building at the time of the fire, and the Fire Marshal is investigating the incident. There were no injuries. North Bellmore, Uniondale, Westbury and Wantagh fire departments contributed mutual aid.
