In East Meadow, Bowling Green students bring history to life

Following the completion of their social studies unit on the Mayan, Aztec and Inca civilizations, students at Bowling Green Elementary School in East Meadow brought ancient history to life through hands-on research and creativity. Rather than ending the unit with a traditional assessment, students showcased their learning by researching and constructing replicas of traditional artifacts that reflected the daily life, customs and innovations of these early civilizations.

Each class transformed its classroom into a Codex Museum, welcoming classmates, teachers, staff members and visitors to explore the student-made displays. As guests moved from exhibit to exhibit, students explained the significance of their artifacts and shared what they had learned about the Mayan, Aztec and Inca cultures.

The interactive museum experience allowed students to deepen their understanding of ancient civilizations while strengthening research, presentation and critical-thinking skills. Through the project, students demonstrated both academic growth and creativity, turning history lessons into a lively and meaningful experience.
