Is it worthwhile to have my dog’s urine checked?

Yes, it is actually very good to have your dog’s or cat’s urine checked regularly. By checking the urine during yearly checkups it will help your veterinarian screen for urinary tract infections as well as signs of diabetes. Picking up these diseases early, helps to prevent them from becoming more serious.

A urine sample can be collected when your dog goes to the bathroom. A cup can be placed under them and a sample can be caught. If you have a syringe, you can also draw the urine up from the ground and put it into the cup. For cats, litter will need to be removed from the litter box. If you can’t collect your own sample, then a cystocentesis can be performed at your veterinarian to get a sterile sample.
