Long Island Marathon stays in the family

Annual Festival of Races made way through East Meadow

The Long Island Marathon, which made its way through East Meadow, Salisbury on Sunday, has become a family affair for one South Shore family.

That is because Shaun McGrath, 32, of Lynbrook, crossed the finish line at Eisenhower Park as the first-place winner — one year after his brother, Dan won the 26.2-mile trek through Central Nassau County. Shaun McGrath won with a finishing time of 2:39. Last year he finished in eighth place with a time of 2:57.

He said that Dan, who was unable to defend his crown because he is recovering from a hip injury, rode alongside Shaun on his bike and encouraged him throughout the race.

Jodie Schoppmann, 26, of Levittown, was the top female finisher, with a time of 2:42. She dominated the rest of the women in her field, and qualified for the Olympic trials with her time.

The annual Long Island Marathon, sponsored by Nassau County, TIAA-CREF and RXR, was the grand finale of the weekend’s “Festival of Races,” which included more than 8,200 participants that ran in a one-mile race, a 5K, a 10K and a half-marathon.
