For 35 years, one Long Island tradition has brought runners, law enforcement, and community members together for a cause that extends far beyond the finish line. The Annual David Lerner Associates Long Island Police Appreciation Run 5K, has been a staple in the community. Despite the heat and humidity, this year’s race still drew an impressive turnout and plenty of energy.
At the front of the pack, Jason Sinert was named the overall winner, while Fiona McLoughlin claimed first place in the women’s division, rounding out a competitive evening on the course.
The race is directed by longtime running leader Mike Polansky, who has overseen the event for about a decade and previously served for many years as president of the Greater Long Island Running Club.
“I have always had a special feeling for this event,” he said. “I have many friends who are cops or retired cops, and I am supportive of law enforcement generally.”
Over the years, the race has raised more than $700,000 for the Long Island Police Crisis Foundation, which provides financial support to police families in crisis. Much of that impact has been made possible through the steady backing of David Lerner Associates, whose support has helped the event grow and sustain its mission.
Beyond the numbers, the event has become a fixture in the local running calendar, a blend of athletic challenge, community pride, and heartfelt purpose. “This race has always been about more than miles,” Polansky said. “It is about showing up for the people who show up for us.”
